Bradbourne House, with its Doric porch, is in Marine Parade, a cul de sac until the 1930's. The House had a small garden across the road, fronting the river and Richmond Dock, where ships could be moored opposite their owner's substantial residences. Now, there is a pretty courtyard and garden at the back of the House that guests are welcome to use.

Appledore & Local Information

Appledore Quay

Appledore itself is a picturesque fishing village first mentioned in surviving documentation of the 14th Century. A free port, it is said that Queen Elizabeth I was so impressed by the bravery and seamanship of Appledore seamen while sailing with Sir Francis Drake against the Spanish Armada, that she had no hesitation in bestowing such a status on the village.

Appledore Cottages

The back streets of Appledore, known as 'drangs', are a delight to wander around. Winding, narrow and devoid of traffic, the old fishermen's cottages seemingly overlap, the only accompaniment the sound of seagulls, they hold a sense of timelessness and modest serenity hardly found in our hectic 21st Century lives.

Appledore is situated at the confluence of the Torridge and Taw Rivers, across the Estuary from Instow. There are pubs, restaurants and shops in the village. Walkers will enjoy North Devon and its Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty; the South West Coast Path and Tarka Trail are minutes away from Bradbourne House.

~

The market town of Bideford and the sandy beaches of Westward Ho! and the Northam Burrows Country Park are all approximately three miles distant. Slightly further on down the coast brings you to Clovelly, Hartland with the Abbey, and on into Cornwall.
